Before you head home with your precious baby, have a conversation with your pediatrician about any immediate health considerations specific to your baby. For example, Jack's hearing needed to be monitored during our hospital stay, and while we initially felt concerned, the medical team was able to guide us through everything we needed to know.
Here are some gentle questions to help you feel prepared:
How is my baby's heart functioning?
Are there any immediate health concerns I should look out for?
What should I know about feeding or other care needs?
Where do we go for follow-up care once we're home?
Remember, if you love your current pediatrician, that's wonderful! If not, don't hesitate to find someone who specializes in caring for children with Down syndrome. Jack's mom switched pediatricians twice to find the perfect fit—advocating for your child is never wrong, and you're already doing an amazing job.
